Tree and Shrub Care in Sachse Round 1 Merit / Dormant Oil This pre-season liquid treatment helps prevent certain insects, such as scale, lacebugs, aphids, and other leaf-feeding pests. We apply Merit, which is a systemic insecticide that is absorbed by plants, and as insects feed on foliage during the season kills the insects. It’s a great product, which provides about 5 months of pest-control. We also include liquid dormant oil, which basically smothers eggs of certain insects such as scale, and prevents them from becoming a problem. This service especially does a great job on preventing lacebug damage on Azaleas. It also does a good job in preventing scale on Euonymous, Maple trees, and other ornamentals. Round 2 Merit Injection / Fertilization Certain trees especially are subject to leaf- feeding caterpillars and other insects. The Merit Insecticide, injected into the root system, will help prevent these problems during the main part of the growing season. We also include a balanced soluble fertilizer, to help provide for the nutritional needs of growing plants. This service will help your trees and shrubs grow healthier and help prevent insect damage. Round 3 Azalea Fertilization Azaleas are beautiful shrubs in many landscapes. In order to perform well, they must be fertilized on an annual basis with special Azalea fertilizer. Late spring to early summer, after the spring blooms are finished, is time when this service is provided. We use a specially blended granular blend with slow-release nitrogen, organic fertilizer, phosphorus, potassium, secondary nutrients, and sulfur to help acidify the soil. We also add a booster application of granular Merit insecticide, to extend the control of Lacebugs into the summer. Round 4-6 Insect / Disease Control From mid-spring through early fall, we can apply from 1-3 liquid treatments of an insecticide/fungicide combination. This spray will help prevent many common ornamental diseases and control damaging insects. At certain time, especially during the summer, we’ll also include a Miticide for spider mites. We also include a small amount of foliar fertilizer to help with the color and health of your ornamentals. We time these treatments about 5-6 weeks apart, during the main part of the growing season when the potential for disease and insects is greater. Depending upon your plants and your expectations, we can schedule 1,2, or all 3 of these services. Most customers will subscribe to the late spring and early summer treatments, and hold off on the final one. Round 7 Tree & Shrub Fertilization This is the most important treatment for your trees and shrubs. Late fall is the best time to fertilize trees and shrubs with a deep-root feeding of important nutrients. We inject a specially formulated liquid ornamental fertilizer into the root zone of your ornamentals which is absorbed and utilized by the plants the following spring. Proper fertilization helps provide a healthy plant, which will perform better, grow more, and stand up to pest problems better. In some cases, we can also provide this service in early spring, in conjunction with injection of Merit insecticide for systemic insect control during the season.
